Melbourne Gids

Recreation and Leisure

Apart from the team sports in Melbourne, this incredible city has much to offer for both the lone activities seeker as well as groups seeking something fun.

Melbourne is a popular place for cycling, as you will clearly notice. With the many meandering paths and marked bike lanes, it was well intended to keep many in this city active on two wheels. On top of the bevy of paths and lanes, Melbourne, geographically, has a very flat terrain, so it makes for a comfortable ride with not too many menacing hills to confront.

A Little Adventure

For those seeking a day or two cycling trip, the Bayside trail is highly recommended. You an either ride for a short distance or cycle the entire 90 kilometer stretch that begins in Port Melbourne and ends in Sorrento. It is a famous stretch that attracts trainers and bicyclers from around the world.

Melbourne hosts several events a year to encourage Melburnians to ride often, including the Around the Bay in a Day, offering 50, 100 and 210 km races with all proceeds going to charities. Another event is the ride to work day, which typically attracts tens of thousands of Melburnians to participate.

Watersports

Rowing is also a popular sport within this city, with many boat sheds along the Yarra river. The Yarra river is also home to the Head of the River, a racing team which first raced in 1868, making it Australia's oldest. The Oarsome Foursome are also from Melbourne, they are a famous Australian crew who, during 1990 and 1998, earned Australia two Olympic gold metals in the coxless fours event

Triathlons are also popular along the Yarra, with professionals and amateurs alike diving into the river on Sundays throughout the summer.
