Cinema in Melbourne

This category easily falls between being a part of Melbourne culture and being it's very own category. The entertainment industry has a very deep rooted involvement in the development of the entertainment market around the world, particularly the film industry.

In 1906, A historic classic by the name of The Story of Kelly Gang was filmed in Melbourne. At 70 minutes in length, by far the longest film during that era, it was considered the very first feature film in history. At $2,250 in production costs, its was also the most expensive at the time. There are discussions that there may have been others, but this title holds out above the rest.

More recent films from Melbourne that deserve mentioning include Mad Max, a film starring Mel Gibson set in a post nuclear war environment and The Castle, an Australian comedy filmed in 1997 that was greatly popular within Australia but never reached many audiences outside of the country.

Melbourne has also provided the world with some of the most famous actors and actresses that have ever graced the screen, they include Kate Blanchett, Guy Pearce and Eric Bana.
